I'm running my first marathon in October and I'm at the stage of training (>25km for long runs) when hydration is becoming crucial. So far I've only used water but someone told me recently that I need an electrolyte replacement while I"m running to prevent cramping. Any ideas on what that might be? Is something like gatorade sufficient or is there a more specific product out there for replacement while running?
Thanks for any ideas/help on this topics.....Shirley |

Shirley, Now is the time to figure it out. If you know what they will provide for the marathon you can try that on a long run as see how it sits in you stomach and what kind of help it is to you. |

Thanks Bob,
Do you think it's realistic to carry all of the fluids needed for a marathon ie: I have a camelback that holds 2 litres, or does everyone rely on the stations? I'm running my race in October in Victoria Canada so it won't be really hot. |

Shirley, You can always take electolyte pills such as Themolyte's from Sports quest direct.. I use these all the time in my Ironman training and had never had a GI problem and ez to carry and take.. I'm with everyone else there is no reason to carry a camelback.. You don't want that extra weight on race day..
With the pills I take 2 pills every hour.. I would think on the marathon if you started taking them after the first hour you should be fine..
Good luck

Thanks for all your great ideas and suggestions. I found out what will be at the race and will try it out ahead of time. I think I'll keep the camelback for training runs as it's so hot here. It won't be nearly that hot in October though. |

Shirley, If your training by yourself you will definitely need to bring your own hydration. I used a CamelBak for several years. 50, 70 and even 100 ounces. You should have seen some of the looks I got. I knew I wasn't fast and so extra weight wasn't an issue with time but it took a tole on my back. Now I use a Nathan belt with 4 - 10 ounce bottles. I keep G2 in 2 and water in 2. I train with a group that has water but I am a heavy sweater and run out salt to. My wife is the unofficial cheer leader and SAG wagon for our group so on these hot days I'll stop by for refills. I also eat some mini saltines (for salt) and a 1/4 Cliff mini for energy.I have never heard about the electrolyte pills. I'll have to check into them. October my normally be cooler but just be prepared in case. Most of all have fun and enjoy your marathon. You'll never have another "first" one. |

It was helpful to me to find out just how much fluid i was losing during long runs, since everyone's a little different. This link tells how to do a basic sweat-rate test for yourself. |
