Last month some of my friends ran in there first triathlon while I ran in my second duathlon. I finished my race and waited impatiently waiting for my friends to finish. Once they started coming in the distance it was amazing watching them complete their race and hear their stories. I then started thinking about what was holding me back from running a triathlon. I came down to the swim. I can swim but never thought I "race swim", but after my friends stories I decided it was time to try swimming and see if it might be something I could try yet this summer or wait till next year. My practice swims went better than I expected. I then contacted the race directors for my next duathlon to see if it was possible to switch to the sprint tri only 1 1/2 weeks out from race day. Their response was "you are now registered for the sprint tri".

Yesterday was race day! It was 500 meter swim, 20k bike, and 5k run.

For whatever reason I was feeling confident going into the swim. Not confident in being fast, rather being able to finish it. My wave start time was 47 minutes after the first wave so I had plenty of time to "relax". My wave comes along and start talking with another younger guy and it was his first time too. We ended up being neck and neck in the swim. I finished the swim in 11:46 for 9th out of 13. I was more than happy with that kinda of time! It took me 3:45 minutes to get out of T1. Not sure how I'm gonna cut that time down. Everthing went well and I was going as fast as I could. Gonna have to practice a bit more I guess.

My bike is an old road bike I picked up off of craigslist and it seems to be serving me quite well. I'm still learning how to ride but I must be doing something right, as I was not passed while on the bike and managed to average 19.5 mph. With two kids my riding time is very limited and has been limited to mostly racing. with only a few scattered rides in between. So, again very happy with how bike went. Placed 4th in age group on the ride time. Managed to exit T2 in 46 seconds, which has been my average in my duathlons.

The run is my strongest discipline. I ran very strong with a 7:02 average. Felt like I still had something in the tank and not sure where I could have pushed it harder, other than the run, so I'll focus on that in my next triathlon. Which hopefully will be in place of my next scheduled duathlon.

I finished my first Sprint Triathlon in 1:16:02. I was thrilled with the time and placed 6th out of 13 in my age group! I'm hooked on tri's. Just gotta work on the swim leg a bit and T1 and I think I'll be competitive in the age groups. :)

Congratulations Scott - sounds like you had a really good day!! I like doing the individual elements but don't think I'm anywhere near fast enough to enter anything - bit anxious about cycling on busy open roads anyway!

Sounds like we're going to be hearing more about your triathlon adventures!!

Thanks Steph! From what I've seen in the few events that I've done, just like in running, speed is not an issue. You are out there doing it and the community cheers you on. Give it a tri, ya might find ya like it. ;)

Love the race report! Nice job, Scott. Very motivating. I can't swim, so I started taking swimming lessons, so that someday I can do a mini tri. Maybe a micro tri ;)

I'm focusing on rowing at the moment. Like running, but keep getting Achilles problems, so have to be careful!! Doing a rowing marathon in September here in the UK - 31 miles!

There are also super sprint tris as well Steph. That is what I generally do. Much smaller 250 swim, 8 mile bike, and 2 mile run. Makes starting easier and then when you get more comfortable you can move up to the longer distances.

It really is addicting though. I did one for the heck of it and ended up doing 4 that year.
