I have a 201 that I've used with workouts off an on for over a year now. I am playing around with the ideas of exporting data directly from polar but had not considered working with data from the Garmin. This would open all sorts of tracking options over the long term. Certainly worth consideration! |

Oh absolutely, Kim. It's terrific!!! The features are endless. Besides the basic features (max H/R, avg. H/R, Calories...etc.) it also segments your course by not only showing your general numbers but also your elevations which allow you to account pitch, slope vs. pace and HR. For instance, if you're doing speed-work you'd normally want straight flats. Or if you're trying to build on hill's Garmin's program allows you to analyze your expelled watt's per climb for an even smarter climb next time. And if you find a certain route that compliments your training goal, plot it and the unit will trace it and guide you through it. I find it extremely specific to whatever you need it to focus on. For instance if I was having a really tough time on a certain point of my run or ride I can go onto the graphed route find that area and analyze what happened. It could have been a steeper area of the road or maybe I was just spinning too many rpm's. Next time I know better.
I was also initially looking at the Edge by Garmin but it's more geared towards cycling. The problem is that in the winter I do alot of running to maintain fitness. The Garmin 301 is perfectly suited for either. If you don't do any outdoor running than the Edge would be great but if you like to do any running, hiking...you may want to reconsider the 301.
Just an opinion |

What I meant was, and I could be wrong...but, I believe the Edge was designed for your bike exclusively. Whereas, the 301 is designed for both running and biking. Where you can either wear it like a wristwatch for running, or mount it to you bike (bike mount is sold seperately) |

Kim,
It would seem that simple but in reality the garmin NEEDS to be programmed for either the bike or run. I accidentally left it set for cycling when I went running once. I almost cried when I saw the stats...but then realized what I had done. according to the Garmin I cycled 3 miles at 7 mph...not very impressive and according to the Garmin, I'd only burned 70 calories if I remember right. In actuality I ran the course and it was a pretty hard run for me, I don't remember what my actual calories burned was but since I still had my HR information I was able to plug it into fitnessjournal's program which gave me a much more accurate count. |
