Dogs are simple (usually!). Control food portions and increase activity. Remember they need to ramp up like we do. Start out at a half mile or mile, paying attention to how he's doing, and add gradually. I've seen dogs work out on treadmills too! Also, snack=ice cube. Our dog thinks they're treats (with the exception of 'bank treats' that come out of the magic tube when we make a deposit).
