check out the galloway program at www.runinjuryfree.com. I did my first marathon using it and felt very prepared without ever being overwhelmed by the training. It builds up really gradually, so it isn't as if you'll have to run 10 miles next week. You might also consider joining a Team in Training or other such group to provide training tips, motivation, partners, etc. Good luck. |

I think the hardest part was the first training run over 20 miles. Another really tough one was that (at least in earlier versions of the training program) you did a training run longer than a marathon. Mine was on a hot day and pretty darn tough. Great shoes really help. I'm currently running in Asics Gel Nimbus VII. It is totally worthwhile to go to a serious running store and have them help you find shoes (by the way, most of the stuff I've read seems to indicate if you are walking more than 2-3 miles, you want running shoes, not walking shoes - but the rest of you FJers should feel free to correct me on that one). My actual first marathon was much easier than I thought. It was a beautiful day in Napa. At about mile 5, I hooked up with this woman running the same pace (slow) as I was and we talked through the whole rest of the run. Since I'd never met her before, we had our entire life stories to exchange, which was great! |
