Saturdays run was tiring. While only 7 miles, one was at 95% effort. So I used up an hour and a half's energy in 8:47. Plus it had rained an hour before the start so the word for the day was humid! Was pleased though with my effort of being able to keep up with the group. Injury (my right ribs trying to occupy the exact same place as the edge of a door with my fist in between...in the dark no less) didn't bother me too much....until Saturday night. Lower front rib felt like a hot marble was trying to come through my skin. I could only take half breaths because it hurt if I breathed deeper. Figured either dehydration (I lost 4 pounds), a muscle knotting up (intercostal ??) or rib displacement. Better today as long as I don't take too deep a breath. Note to self....don't run or try to run in a dark classroom. Will try a run on Tuesday morning to see how it goes. On the 8th we have a 12-13 mile training run. More hot and humid I bet.

Out of my normal food routine last week so snacking a little extra. Some continuation this week. Hey Gerry send some of your discipline my way.

Hi all...thought I posted but apparently it didn't take (hmm). I'm a bit on and off with the training these past few days. I think it's because I started out with the typical-previously-active-restarter-that-thinks-she's-still-can-still-train-at-the-same-level-she-used-to over doing the first week and got exhausted to the point of not sleeping well (hence my 2 a.m. insomnia walk Mon). I don't think my English college professor would have loved that sentence!

So this week I'm to get in more walks and a couple easy jogs ending with a 5k on Sunday.

Stuttered a bit last week, but am back in the groove! Ran 10 miles yesterday and plan on at least another 6 tomorrow and then my last scheduled 5k on Saturday morning. Hoping for a strong race as I will be switching my main focus back to the marathon after this weekend. The marathon will be here before I know it, so I need to recommit myself to the training as I have slightly slacked off in my preparation for my 1st marathon. In fact it still scares me! I'm sure as I continue to put in the longer runs I'll gain confidence for the race. Just need more "practice". Have a great week everyone!

Scott

Got my Tmill run this morning. A 10K in an hour with various inclines from 2 to 6.5. Figured if I wasn't going to be as careful as I should about snacking, I was going to teach my body a lesson by burning more calories. My ribs didn't bother me and pain starting to be a distant memory...yea!

Have been concerned about my marathon training to Scott. Pace Group leader trying to convince me that the long runs are for endurance and not to worry about a 13-13:30 pace. Somehow I'm supposed to finish in five and a half hours which if I can will be knocking more than a minute per mile time from a couple years ago. I'm livin' it but I'm sceptical. Scott, I think for most people, the marathon can be divided up into two races. One 20 miles then another at 6.2. Mine seems to be a mind battle from the very start. Always worrying about the clock and working myself up so I use up energy inefficiently. My group leader tells me to trust the process and has threatened to not let me run with my Garmin. May have to hide it under a wrist band or something. If I can convince myself that the marathon I'm training for (Big D) is a couple of months after the one I've run before (White Rock), maybe I can trick my mind into not worrying so much when I run the White Rock which is the biggie here.

Beverly I don't think you would enter your dogs in a show without giving them the benefit of some training and grooming. You have to give yourself the benefit of going through a schedule and not trying to do it all at once. I'm sure you will be able to get your miles in.

Bob, thanks! My problem is I love to sit (operative word there) and create the schedules rather actually follow them. I thinks that's why I love the phrase, "Discipline creates Freedom," I just haven't gotten the knack of the discipline part. For instance, I'd rather sit here and type to you guys :) tho I did just get in from a run/walk in prep for 5k Sun.

OK, OK, I'm getting back to work now. B

Beverly,

If we only had the discipline of Gerry. I mean anyone who can not eat chips has to be able to do just about anything. Because what I do is buy the baked ones (oh so healthy huh). Then think I've got all these chips....better eat them up so I won't be tempted to eat them. Seems like solid guy logic to me. Do you have a Galloway group you can train with? They might let you hang with them.

Bob, I agree! But Bob and Gerry...that's my logic too (has been almost as long as I can remember!...wait, the other logic growing up was, eat it before your brothers do or you won't get any!). Totally agree on the the baked chips thing, unless I'm feeling righteous while eating a turkey sandwich with lots of vegies for lunch. :P Don't know about the low-fat ice cream, I only eat sugar-free (oh for Pete's sake g, I can hear you groaning all the way in St Louis!).

I'll check into the Galloway group here Bob. It's just with our schedules for work and dog shows I can't commit to always being there and that's not a great situation for group activities. But you're right, maybe I can hang out a bit. ~Beverly

Hi everyone!

Well I join the list of walking wounded -- not sure what I did to my knee, but it has been giving me major problems all week. Shifted my exercise focus to cycling, though, and it's been a great change.

Had a major job change last week, so of course the daily routine is quite different. Now I'm presented with the problem that I have had for many years....being home and letting everything else take priority over my exercise (teenagers and pre-teens will do that to you!) This truly is my biggest challenge -- and prioritizing myself is a huge lifestyle change for me. But, with the committment I have made over the past several months, I think I'm finally prepared to face this and win!

My goal for the week is to maintain the priority of exercising and to journal daily for myself to show that I am more effective when I spend this time on me.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Got crazy and signed up for a local 5k (maybe bcs I liked the name...Guts n Glory)! Disappointing finish...38:21 (goal 35 or less so I was on target) but I blame the awesome steak dinner the night before on our anniversay (only one glass of merlot). I blame it because was doing great (about 11:30 avg first 2 mi...awesome for me) then the cramps kicked in (not leg cramps) so walked till subsided. But, I did it and it felt good.

Beverly,

Way to go, and go you did! 11:30 per mile...first Scott and now Beverly. Everybody is faster than Bob.....poor poor Bob. Sounds like if you build up your endurance some you'll be waiting at the finish line saying "Hey Scott, what took you so long"?

Congratulations!
