Happy Monday everyone!

I had a great start to last week. Faded a little towards the end due to a combination of bad weather and my daughters first birthday celebrations on Saturday and Sunday. I did log 16 miles running or 29 in 4 days if you include the 1/2 I ran on Sunday. Overall, a great week and I'm ready to hit the road running tonight!

My favorite workout is running outside on the open road, trail, or path. Just being outside is so much more enjoyable over a treadmill. My least favorite workout is weights in general. I despise strength training! It's a necessary evil though so that is gonna become more of a focus with my running as well.

Have a great week everyone!

Hiya!

Had a slight setback over the weekend. I was carrying something awkward and bigger than me (rejecting all offers of help, because I'm strong, and I can do it MYSELF!) and sort of strained my shoulder. Feeling better today, but at one point yesterday couldn't move my arm away from my body without yelping! Today it is just slightly tender under the shoulder blade, and I have full mobility.

Modified my workout for today so that it included no weights for the upper body. I still feel as if I did something good for myself, just going through the motions of the exercises for the arms. And bodyweight squats/lunges can be challenging, if you just keep going until they become hard to do!

Least favorite excercise: One is the elliptical machine. I hates it, and I'm not good at it. The other might be a Bulgarian Split Squat with an Overhead Press. Can. Not. Do. (Yet!) Favorite exercise is any kind of Squat except the one I don't like!

Greetings All!!!

Happy Monday backatcha Scott! Gerry, have super fun, be safe and enjoy the journey! Ann...tsk, tsk...we're here to help each other...aceept it!! :)

I'm pleased with my progress thus far. Meeting/exceeding my goals. Most pleased about the water intake, for a while there I didn't seem to "be able" to gag it down now enjoying it. Good thing too! A bladder/kidney infection rearing its ugly head and I am getting medicine today. Figures, really kicked in yesterday...my first day back to the gym in MONTHS!!!! Did some of that strength training Scott so adores :) Funny how much strength I've lost from not tending to it. Onward and upward!

This week: Move 4+/hrs/week (up from 3). Add strengh training, 2x (up from 0). 8 8-oz glasses+ water/day/6x this week (up from 6). Lose a pound. Check into FJ at least twice.

Hmm, favorite exercise...trail running (back when I ran, now biking or hiking). But my really favorite is ocean swimming; alas, no ocean in MO. Least favorite? A gym workout without my music (with music, all is well with the world and I can ignore the grunts and inance chat). Good question!

Way to go Terry! And you'll find, the taste gets worse the longer you're away from it. Plus soda so bad for people, women especially! Impressive!

Did my rowing yesterday and I didn't fall in, so that has to be a plus!!! It was a good day, good weather, good people and we had a laugh!! Took loads of photos!!!

Been running this morning and then to Zumba class this evening. Planning to go cycling tomorrow morning and on the exercise bike if I can't face that!! Different zumba class tomorrow evening. Need to pull some strength training in somewhere!!!!!

Had a chinese meal last night, but apart from that, food has been good for the most part.

Everyone seems to be doing great

Ok, back for week 3! My least favorite workout is the same as Gerry's...lunges. Honestly I hate them so much I will use that 2 minutes of a workout video to "check on the kids" who are 7 and 9 now and don't need to be hovered over. I am not sure what my favorite is yet. I do love running outdoors, but there are still so many things to try.

I am going to get back on the bandwagon...despite a rough few days last week I have now worked out 4 days straight, including a run on sunday. I am going to log my food. Period. My weight is unchanged now for almost an entire month. Somewhere I am failing. I am happy it has not gone up, obviously I am doing something right, just not enough!

We are having transition issues with my father in law, and there is an increasing concern that he will be in an assisted living facility sooner rather than later. Family drama, what would life be without it!

Make it a great week!

Ann, you can be strong and careful! I hope you're doing better today.

Beverly, I'm glad to hear you're drinking your water, that's what I need to focus on this week.

my results for my first week: goal - 12 miles, only made 8. record intake - done, check it off!. 5 glasses water each day- not even close. no weight gain. yup, down a pound.

goals for next week - goal 12 miles (I can do that), intake (I'm on a roll, got to keep going), water - lowering goal to 4 glasses, just to get me moving in the right direction. No weight gain.

who's next?

Loretta, My understanding of burpees are you are standing then as fast as you can, bend over putting your hands on the floor, sending your feet behind you like your about to do a push up then bringing your feet back to where they were and standing up...that's one. I don't know why they are called burpee's except with all the movement your insides go through it might give you the desire to burp. Needless to say I don't do these very well.

Tomorrow I shoot for the track marathon. 366 laps. This will probably be my one and only chance in this life to do something nobody has ever done all be it rather goofy. It's also the only chance I'll have to win my age group. Did I mention I'm the only one doing this? While it will be climate controlled, it won't be in the 40's. While there won't be hills unless you count the banks at either end and I will, I don't expect to set any speed records. 1. I only got to 19.5 miles in my training. 2. From about 9 to 11 am there are many elderly people on the track and I really don't want to knock over someone with a walker or just because they don't look to see if anyone is coming before crossing the track. 3. My back has been bothering me some. I have to remember that work is work and running is play for me. I am taking some vacation time to do this so no stress! No stress! No stress! Lord willing I'll be able to finish without putting to big of a rut and sweat on the track. I'm starting to think I need to tie a mop to me and drag it behind me.

Wow Bob! Go get'em tomorrow! I'm just starting my training for a 2nd attempt at a marathon. Hoping to do Grand Rapids again this fall. I have a ton more support this time around from my groupies/running buds so hopefully I don't slack off my training when it gets really warm. Good luck BOB!!!!

GO BOB~ GO LORETTA~ GO TERRY~ GO STEPH~ GO DIANE~ GO GERRY~ (um wait, you already left I think). Bob, a track marathon...wow. I lose count above three times around. Is Sharon going to count for you or do you have a clicker thingy? Wow. That is incredible and wow.

Loretta, I found it helps to make deals with myself...drink a glass of water, then I can [fill in blank]. Or, just get a big ol' 4 cup serving and down it! Get er done :) How's that walking going Terry? Thought of you this morning (yawn). But my husband got up with me and that makes me very happy!

Scott, What was nice for us on those toasty days in Texas was to have a cold wash cloth for after our long runs. That and slowing down some. I know you will do well and from the way things have been going for you I wouldn't be surprised if you had a PR.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have been contacted by a PR guy at the hospital who is going to see if some local news stations would be interested in doing a report. I think they will see I have the perfect face for radio and not TV. Sharon will be there and I will have a thumb counter and a Polar watch with foot pod.

For those who have a hard time with water consumption I have found keeping an ice water filled cup with a straw sitting around me works great! I am not sure what difference the straw makes but it really seems to help with intake. I have these insulated cups from both world market and starbucks that have screw on lids and straws, the cats stay out of my cup and they keep the water cold. Just a though!

Week has been pretty good so far! Trying to keep the workouts going since I have no idea what the Easter weekend will bring except a house full of people!

Thanks for the encouragement Beverly! :) keep it up everyone!

Made it to the gym this morning, so did my dear husband! He stayed up later than I, watching the Mavericks (I cheered in my sleep). We were trying to convince each other it was ok to sleep in 1 outta 5 mornings, um, make that 4 since we don't often go on Mondays (not always open on time). So he got up to let our critters out and Bella, my sweet 76# girl, jumped on me and licked my face and wiggled. So Maverick jumped up too (90#) not wanting to miss out. Dan took them down and I realized I was awake and it would be a shame to waste it...sooooo. Dan came up all ready to crawl back into bed, saw me and heavy sighed as he went to brush his teeth. Thanks Bella!

For a lack of better words, Happy Hump Day Everyone!

Another good start to the week so far. Went out for a run Monday night. It was supposed to be an "easy" run. Well, the first 3 miles were at a nice easy conversational pace. Then something happened, and the next 3 miles were run at an exponentially faster pace. By that point I had one mile to go and decided to stay with the progression and run that last mile as fast as I could. It was about 30 seconds faster than my previous mile! So, my easy workout turned into a progressive run. I also biked 3 miles with my daughter in the behind me in the buggy at an easy pace. She loves it outside. :D After the run I stretched really good and then before I went to bed I stretched some more as I could tell I was gonna pay for the workout the next day.

Tuesday, my legs were screaming at me! You didn't go easy yesterday!!! The plan was a group run through some hills. Well, the groupies one by one bowed out of the run for one reason or another and left me and one other guy. I looked outside and it just started raining/sleeting. I called him up and we postponed the run till next Tuesday. Later on that evening I thought about running on the mill but decided to just stretch some more as my legs were still screaming at me.

So, the plan tonight is an "easy" run and another one tomorrow. Then 12 mile long run on Saturday with one of the group members. Might have to take the dogs with me tonight to keep me from running to fast. ;-)

Hope ya'll are having a great week so far!

Scott

Loretta,I did make it...finally. Lot slower than I had thought but not being rested and the temp and humidity were both 68. The news stations decided not to cover which took a lot of stress off of me. However the director of the fitness center had sent an email to the whole hospital about what I was doing so periodically throughout the marathon I would hear "hey who is Bob...go Bob!" It was determined by the floor manager that 352 laps would be the requirement and so at 5:38am Sharon and I walked the first mile. With each mile that I finished another balloon would appear along the track rail. Then poster board signs of love, encouragement and support would show up. The director for the hospital came by and the PR guy came by several times and took some pictures. One of the cardiac rehab specialists that had guided me through rehab came by. I said "remember near the end of my 12 weeks when I asked if it was ok to try and run a little on the treadmill.....see what you started" I don't know how many members and staff walked or ran with me but there were a lot. About lap 100 I thought that it would be cool to run the last mile. At lap 150 the last 3/4 of a mile. I think you can see a pattern here. So the last 2/10's was all I could manage. Then a cool-down walk and they let Sharon and I put up the last balloon. The whoops and applause as I came around the last time could be heard outside. I am humbled that so many people would support Sharon and I that way. From an elderly lady with a cane and oxygen to an ultra marathoner, it was amazing to hear that I was an inspiration to them. I don't know why. I really am nobody special. Just a really stubborn, hard headed guy who doesn't know any better. I was shooting for 7 hours and hit 6:56:56. My worst time ever for a marathon but I am so so thankful for it. So much love and support.

Well done Bob - that's fantastic!! Such a lot of effort! No wonder you were getting all that support - you certainly deserved it!

I've done well this week - exercised every day and been really good with my food for the most part. Even discovered that I like spinach if it's not cooked!!

Going on a rowing tour tomorrow - it's supposed to be a 'social outing' and we're rowing 22 miles - don't know how social that will be!!! The weather's fine in the UK at the moment so I'll have to remember my sunscreen!

Have a good weekend and stick with it!

Yay Bob! What an all-around super experience. Wish we all could've been there to cheer you on too ('cept you know we were in your heart <3 ). I love all the balloons.

Hey Steph...you social girl you! Have fun (it sounds like a neat experience too).

What a great forum this is to get to be able to share in such experiences as we all have. All from different walks of life, parts of the world and yet, here we are. So many things to learn from each other and receive smiles from across the miles. Happy Thursday!

PS, a couple of you haven't checked in...we miss you! Let us know what's-a-happenin'.

Welcome Sonja! Glad you made the decision to join us and look forward to your contributions. :)

Slept in this morning -- GLORIOUS!! Sleep can be restorative you know, and this was. Did strength training 4x this week exceeding goal of 2x so my poor ol' body earned it. Happy Friday all, I know it's a Good one :)

I got out for a 2.5 mile run this morning, and it felt great! I would have kept going but I still have doctor's orders to follow. We are having folks over for a cookout tonight so I am glad I got the run in...there will be too much good food around!

Congrats Bob...on many fronts. Having a spouse who survived a catastrophic event, I understand the value of celebrating life and commend you for having the dedication to complete the indoor track marathon!

Have a great Easter weekend!

Buddy, Hey major heart attacks aren't any fun either. Glad they caught it. Are you going to have to go through any kind of rehab? Be careful.

Went in to work out a tiny bit on Friday. Quads and back still sore. They had saved all the encouragement posters for us to bring home. Spent an hour floating in the pool then a few laps around the track to let it know it didn't get the best of me on Wednesday. Did a interview with a local paper reporter/blogger and might do a story on my indoor marathon. Slept in until 5:15 this morning and headed out for a neighborhood hill run. Got to get ready for the half coming up in a couple weeks. Ended up turning right at the high school for an 8 miler instead of a 10 if I had turned left. Lots more hills to that way. Have a local 5K this weekend. Plan on running up to it (4 miles) then walking the 5K with Sharon then running back home weather and energy permitting.
