My friend just trained for his at age 38 and completed it TODAY! IRONMAN 70.3 (Vineman). He mostly followed the Joe Friel book.
I have used the site just mentioned before, and that is awsome too.

Hey Greg - I think the Wildflower is excellent. It is in May. Thats the earliest one I am aware of off the top of my head. It has a 1/2 on Saturday and an Olympic on Sunday. They call it "full course" and "Short course".
The atmosphere is amazing, the numbers of people staggering, and the race (either one) quite challanging. This one comes highly recommended. Camping there is the way to go. (not the way I went, but I was a novice. Next year, camping for sure.)
It has a great draw from Northern CA and Southern CA. As well as athletes all over the world.
Vineman was far less exciting, but more beautiful of a course. However, we just had it last Sunday. I was late signing up and didn't get a spot. But I spent the whole day out there cheering friends, and a fellow FJ friend lives 2 blocks from the finish, so he hosted a great post Vineman BBQ. Bis story was that the SF Lombardi Tri Team has a guy who placed 4th in his age group and received a spot in KONA! He is a stud, I have riden and ran with him before, and he blows my doors off. His swim was 27min and a few seconds for the 1.2 mile, that was flying!!!

No doubt you will be a changed person after your IMC in August. That Mt. Richter sounds just brutal. The words "Pass" and "Tiathlon" should not be mentioned in the same sentance. ;o)
I know Chris wants to show at the Wildflower in 08. He tried for 07, but they did not have anymore spots for him. We should see about setting 4 main events. Time to go back and see who's idea this was from the start...
