Alright, I'm looking at my first triathlon next year. Possibly that is. I have a lot of things to sort out first though. 1. I need a bike. I have a bike. It's a mountain bike and from what I've read so far is that I'll be laughed at if I use that. So, I'm on a tight budget. My price range is only $300-$500. Any suggestions on models would be greatly appreciated. I also want to point out that I have no idea what to look for in a bike, so things to look for a beginner would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

That is a very tight budget. You might consider checking the used market in you area. I would start with local bike clubs and teams as they tend to treat newbies fairly. Switching to a road bike may also mean money on new shoes depending on what pedal system you are currently using.
You could also start looking at local bike shops that cater to the casual rider. Bikes are like cars in that they have new models each year and there are some great clearance prices on 2019 models. I checked on line at www.performancebike.com, a great source for inexpensive bike stuff, but the best deal I could find was $599 for a complete road bike.
I hope this helped and good luck.
