I think that you are right on the money. Different makers will have a different feel to the bike. I have been looking for a site as well, but any comments would still be opinion. Take some time and ride a few different bikes first.
Probably the closest I have found is Bicycle magazine's review of bikes issue that they do once a year on new models.
